  7. FILES ON THIS DISK
  8.  
  9. The files TAP.EXE and TAPDOC.EXE are self extracting zip files.
  10. That means that all the programs and files are contained in a
  11. single "program" that will magically transform itself into the
  12. separate files upon execution.
  13.  
  14. For example, if you have TAP.EXE in the current directory, you
  15. could type:
  16.  
  17. TAP C:\TAP
  18.  
  19. and all the programs, scripts, and files will end up in C:\TAP.
  20. If you do not specify a directory like C:\TAP, the files will
  21. extract into the current directory.
  22.  
  23. If you wish to extract the files directly from the distribution
  24. floppy, prefix the command with "A:" such as:
  25.  
  26. A:TAP C:\TAP
  27.  
  28. Note:     Replace "A" with the letter of the floppy drive you are
  29.           using if different than A:.

  32. WHERE SHOULD YOU INSTALL VERSION 5.3?

  35. *** I DO NOT HAVE A PRIOR VERSION OF TAPCIS
  36.  
  37. If this is your first version of TAPCIS the choice is totally up
  38. to you. We recommend installing TAPCIS in its own directory,
  39. C:\TAP, for example.
  40.  
  41. Create this directory then read the "INSTALLATION" section for
  42. specifics on the files included on the distribution disk and
  43. installation of 5.3.

  46. *** I HAVE ANOTHER VERSION OF TAPCIS CURRENTLY INSTALLED
  47.  
  48. You have a number of choices. If hard drive space permits, you
  49. could create a new directory for 5.3 leaving 5.2a completely
  50. intact in another directory. This is the safest but will use a
  51. lot of disk space. You'll also need to copy over to the new
  52. directory your PARAMS.CIS file from 5.2a and rejoin all your
  53. forums (or copy over the *.SEC files).
  54.  
  55. Another and perhaps more popular option is to install TAPCIS 5.3
  56. in the same directory where 5.2a was located:
  57.  
  58. BACKUP! PLEASE! Practice safe computing every time you install
  59. any new software. TAPCIS 5.3 has been extensively tested for over
  60. 6 months, but no software is perfect. Once your PARAMS.CIS file
  61. has been used by 5.3, it CANNOT be used by 5.2a without
  62. corrupting the file. I strongly suggest making a special backup
  63. of PARAMS.CIS.

  66. INSTALLATION
  67.  
  68. 1) Extract the files by running the TAP.EXE program.
  69.  
  70. 2) UPDATE ONLY: As each file is about to be extracted, the 
  71.    program looks to see if it already exists. Most of these 
  72.    files will already exist in an older version 5.2a directory.
  73.    Updating users should extract all files EXCEPT FOR
  74.    USERID.CIS! This is the TAPCIS Address book. The one in 
  75.    TAP.EXE is one to get new users started; you should not 
  76.    replace your own USERID.CIS with this file (answer NO when
  77.    asked). All other files should be replaced.

  79. 3) UPDATE ONLY: Run the NAMES.BAT file from your current 
  80.    directory to rename any old files that have new names under 
  81.    5.3 (e.g., EASYPLEX.MSG becomes MAIL.MSG). You can then 
  82.    delete NAMES.BAT. NAMES.BAT does not rename or delete the old
  83.    files TELE1200.SCR and TELE2400.SCR. If you have those and
  84.    have not modified them for some reason, they can be  deleted.
  85.    They are replaced by SPRINT12.SCR and SPRINT24.SCR  for
  86.    SprintNet/Telenet access.

  88. 4) The TAP.EXE file contains the following files. To save disk 
  89.    space, feel free to delete the ones you do not need. However,
  90.    if you do, I suggest that you save the original  TAP.EXE on a
  91.    backup disk in case you need one of the files later:

  163. 5) The documentation is in TAPDOC.EXE. See the file README.DOC 
  164.    once you uncompress the files by running TAPDOC. This file 
  165.    also includes the figures and the figures viewing program 
  166.    TAPFIGS.

  168. Note:     If you have the printed manual for TAPCIS 5.3 you WILL
  169.           NOT need any of the files in TAPDOC.EXE.  In any case,
  170.           you cannot decompress TAPDOC.EXE onto a single 360K
  171.           floppy disk.

  178. PARAMS.CIS file. Copying the 5.2a PARAMS file and using it with

  181. manual from Support Group, Inc.
